Career Arch of Sydney McLaughlin

McLaughlin was perhaps born to be an athlete. Her dad, Willie, was a semi-finalist in the 400m at the 1984 Olympic trails. While her mum was also a runner and her brother got silver in the 400m hurdles at the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships. But Sydney has outdone them all. She is an Olympic gold medallist and 400m hurdle world record holder. When she walks over the track, it feels as if she owns the 400 m hurdles. Sydney has been hailed as a prodigal talent when it comes to track and field events from the USA. Apart from 400m hurdles, she also won the 4×400 m relay along with Phyllis Francis, Dalilah Muhammad and Wadeline Jonathas.

McLaughlin’s potential to make history has long since been written on the wall. She competed at Rio 2016 at the age of just 16, having qualified third in the US national trials. She eventually finished 16th overall. Although she was eliminated in the semi-finals, the world has seen an emerging talent. At the time, her age caught the headlines. McLaughlin was the youngest athlete to qualify for the USA track team since 1980. Although she was not expected to win a medal at such a young age, athletics fans still believed they were seeing a star in the making. At the 2019 World Championships in Doha, the young American won silver in the 400m hurdles. “I knew the race would be fast,” said McLaughlin after the Worlds. “But I didn’t think it would be that fast. I’m still young and I’ve learned so much.”

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, McLaughlin defeated Muhammad. She ran a world record time of 51.46 seconds and claimed the Olympic gold. In June of 2022, she broke her own world record; running a time of 51.41 during the USATF Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. A month later at the World Championships, she smashed her own world record again with a time of 50.68 seconds and took the title of World Champion. In 2023, during her first race running the 400 meters as a professional, McLaughlin-Levrone ran 49.71 seconds. She finished second to Marileidy Paulino at the Diamond League meet in Paris, France. Later that month, McLaughlin-Levrone ran 49.51 seconds at the 2023 USATF New York GP. In July 2023, McLaughlin-Levrone ran a world-leading performance of 48.74 seconds at the USATF Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
