Career Arch of Gianmarco Tamberi

Gianmarco started his athletics career under the tutelage of his father. His father, Marco Tamberi was also a remarkable high jumper. He held the indoor Italian record in 1983 with a height of 2.28 m. In 2015, Tamberi broke the Italian high jump record twice. The first time with a jump of 2.34 m in Cologne. The second time was at Eberstadt with a 2.37 m. At Ebestadt he was second behind Derek Drouin. He later finished 8th at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing. During the winter of 2016, Tamberi won every contest he participated in. He won in Banska Bystrica with 2.35 m where he set a new Italian indoor record. However, Marco Fassinotti equalled it in the same event. Then he won in Trinec after clearing 2.33 m.

At the 2016 High Jump Moravia Tour, he recorded a jump of 2.38 m. This was enough to beat Chris Baker of Great Britain and Kyriakos Ioannou of Cyprus. Additionally, it also gave him the Italian indoor high jump record. He won a gold medal at the World Indoor Championships in Portland in March 2016 with a jump of 2.36 m. His stellar performance in the High Jump Moravia Tour in 2016 saw him clear a remarkable 2.38 m. This result enabled him to surpass Chris Baker from the United Kingdom and Kyriakos Ioannou from Cyprus. It also earned him another Italian indoor high jump record. In March 2016, he bagged a gold medal at the World Indoor Championships in Portland with a clearance of 2.36 m. However, an injury hit him in the same year, which prevented him from participating in the Rio Olympics 2016.

Tamberi is known for his unique practice of growing a full beard during the qualifiers. He then shaves it in half for the finals. Gradually, this has made a distinct impression at the major competitions. An extraordinary event took place on 1 August 2021 during the Summer Olympics 2020, where Tamberi and Qatari athlete Mutaz Essa Barshim both cleared 2.37 m in the men’s high jump. In something that had never happened in the history of the Olympic Games, the two athletes agreed to share the gold medal. With the Paris Olympics at a stone’s throw away, Tamberi will be more than eager to defend his crown.
