European Athletics U23 Championships: What are the championship records set at the event?

The European Athletics U23 Championships is a biennial track and field event for Europe’s top athletes under the age of 23. The event has been a mainstay of European athletics since its inception in 1997. The tournament, administered by the European Athletic Association, replaced the European Athletics U23 Cup. The European Cup had hosted its competitions in 1992 and 1994 and had distinct A and B leagues. This championship is among the oldest age-group competitions sponsored by European Athletics.

There are other prominent age group competitions as well which are organized by the European Athletic Association. The European Athletics U20 Championships, once named the ‘Junior Championships’, occur in the same odd-numbered years. While, the European Athletics U18 Championships, formerly the ‘Youth Championships’, are organized in even-numbered years.

The most recent edition of the European Athletics U23 Championships took place in Tallinn, Estonia, from 8 to 11 July, 2021, at the Kadriorg Stadium. One of the key moments was Slovenia’s Kristjan Ceh defending his title successfully. The reigning world champion set a new championship record with a discus throw of 67.45m. In the same edition, Yaroslava Mahuchikh, the renowned high jump athlete, established another championship record with a leap of 2.00m. 

At the European Athletics U23 Championships in Tallinn, a total of six new championship records were achieved. Moreover, the German men’s and women’s 4x100m teams redefined the European U23 record by clocking a timing of 38.70 seconds and 43.05 seconds. Besides these records, Ricky Petrucciani attained a timing of 45.02 in the men’s 400 and Emma Zapletalová established in the women’s 400m hurdles (54.28) and delivered great performances.
