Athletics Stats: Indian national record holders in track & field events

Indian athletes have been creating an impression in the international arena over the past few years. Neeraj Chopra’s gold medal-winning performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics has acted as an inspiration for many athletes. Since then, the nation has witnessed numerous Indian national records holders in track and field events being broken and athletes competing with world-class athletes and collecting medals despite facing many challenges.

May 6, 2023, was a record-breaking day for Indian athletics as three National records were smashed on the same date.  At the Sound Running On Track Fest 2023 which took place in Los Angeles, USA, Parul Chaudhary broke a 13-year-old record of Preeja Sreedharan (15:15.89) which she had established at the Asian Games 2010 in the women’s 5000m. Avinash Sable bettered his own national record to finish with a timing of 13:19.30 and place twelfth at the World Athletics Continental Tour silver event. While, triple jumper Praveen Chithravel achieved a jump of 17.37m, to break Renjith Maheswary’s mark which he set in 2016 and qualified for the World Championships.

The 25-year-old Amlan Borgohain is the present holder of the men’s 100m and 200m records. While two-time Asian Games silver medalist Dutee Chand owns the women’s 100-meter record which she clocked at the Indian Grand Prix 4 on June 21, 2021. Indian middle-distance runner and two-time Asian Games medalist Jinson Johnson presently own two national records – the men’s 1500m and 5000m events.

Commonwealth Games 2022 silver medalist Avinash Sable who ended Kenyan dominance in the Birmingham Games is the current record holder in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, 5000m, and half marathon as well. Considering Sable has been consistently smashing both national records, he may again breach the records in upcoming international meetings.
