Athletics: List of athletes who hold the world records in various Olympic disciplines

The sport of Athletics mostly refers to competitive running, jumping, throwing, and walking. Systematic Athletics may be dated back to the Ancient Olympic Games which took place in 776 BC. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Western Europe and North America developed the rules and structure of the modern athletic competitions. These regulations were later adopted by other regions of the world. The majority of current top-level competitions are staged under the authority of World Athletics, the world’s governing authority for athletics, or one of its affiliated continental or national associations.

Track and field, road running, race walking, cross-country running, mountain running, and trail running are the six categories that World Athletics, the sport’s governing body, uses to define athletics. The athletics competition is the heart of the Summer Olympics. Whereas, the World Athletics Championships is the most significant international athletics competition which includes track and field events, marathon running, and race walking. The World Half Marathon Championships and the World Athletics Cross Country Championships are two other elite sports competitions.

List of track and field athletes who hold world records in various Olympic disciplines

World Athletics is responsible for approving world records in athletics. Athletics records include the finest performance by an athlete in any of the track and field, road running, and race walking competitions. The governing body has established the requirements that must be met in order to certify a world record. These requirements are determined by a variety of factors such as track and equipment measurements, drug testing, wind assistance, and so on.

Although World Athletics recognizes many athletics disciplines, there are a lot of events that are not a part of the Summer Olympics program schedule. Some of these events are the 60m, Mile, 5km and 10km (road), half marathon, etc. Since the Summer Olympics are the greatest sporting event on the globe, let’s take a look at the athletes who are the holders of the world records in all the Olympic disciplines.
