Asian Games 2022: Tajinderpal Singh Toor wins gold; retains men’s shot put title

At the Hangzhou Asian Games 2022, Tajinderpal Singh Toor clinched gold in the men’s shot put, earning India’s second gold in Athletics. With this, Toor, who had previously won the gold medal in the men’s shot put in 2018 in Jakarta, joined the elite club of Indian shot putters who have successfully retained their Asian Games title. The illustrious list includes Parduman Singh Brar (champion in 1954 and 1958), Joginder Singh (gold medalist in 1966 and 1970), and Bahadur Singh Chouhan (winner in 1978 and 1982).

What happened during the event?

The competition was not an easy one for the Indian athlete. His initial two efforts resulted in no throws. It was only during his third attempt that Tajinderpal Singh Toor secured a legal throw, recording a distance of 19.51m. At this time, Saudi Arabia’s Mohamed Daouda Tolo was in the lead with a 19.93m throw.

However, Toor managed a remarkable 20.06m in his next attempt and positioned himself as a top contender. Tolo, once again, regained his lead by a marginal 0.12m. But Tajinderpal Singh Toor’s resilience paid off as he launched the shot put to a stellar 20.36m in his final attempt. This left Tolo trailing and he couldn’t better the mark set by Toor.

Tajinder’s career affected by injuries

At 28, the expectations were high for Toor, especially since he was the reigning gold medalist from 2018. He also holds the unique distinction of being the Asian record holder in outdoors (21.77m). But, his journey to the podium wasn’t without its challenges. Over the years, injuries have frequently impacted his career.

A few months back, at the National Inter-State Championships 2023, Tajinderpal Singh Toor established a new Asian record with a 21.77m throw. However, a groin injury he sustained at the Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok hindered his performance. Although this injury didn’t prevent him from clinching gold with a 20.23m throw, it compelled him to withdraw from the subsequent World Championships.

Additionally, Tajinderpal Singh Toor underwent surgery on his throwing arm’s left wrist post the Tokyo Olympics. But, he had reiterated that his wrist had recovered fully. Unfortunately, as he was gearing up for the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest, he was affected by a groin injury.

India in the men’s shot put at the Asian Games

Historically, India has a strong tradition in the shot put, with Toor’s recent performance maintaining the country’s stature in this discipline. Collectively, Indian athletes have earned gold in the men’s shot put on nine occasions across the previous 18 editions of the Asian Games, establishing a dominance in this event.
