Asian Athletics Championships 2023 Stats: Who are the medal winners from India?

The Asian Athletics Championships 2023 took place at the Supachalasai National Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand from July 12 to July 16, 2023. A total of 728 athletes from 42 different nations marked their participation at the Asian Athletics Championships 2023. The event has been organized on a biennial basis since 1973. The competition was however canceled in 1977 due to political controversy.

The event saw Indian athletes clinching a commendable total of 27 medals. This tally included six gold, twelve silver, and nine bronze medals. This feat helped India match their best-ever medal haul from the Bhubaneswar 2017 Championships, where they also collected 27 medals with nine of them being gold. 

In the previous Doha 2019 Asian Athletics Championships, India had secured a total of 16 medals, including two gold, seven silver, and seven bronze. The championships had not taken place for four years due to the COVID-19 pandemic which led to the cancellation of the Hangzhou, China 2021 edition. 

India’s performance at the Asian Athletics Championships 2023

The gold medals for India in the 2023 edition came from men’s shot put competitor – Tajinderpal Singh Toor, women’s hurdler Jyothi Yarraji, triple jumper Abdulla Aboobacker, women’s steeplechase runner Parul Chaudhary, men’s 1500m athlete Ajay Kumar Saroj, and the mixed 4x400m relay squad made up of Rajesh Ramesh, Aishwarya Kailash Mishra, Amoj Jacob, and Subha Venkatesan.

India clinched the third spot in the overall medals table at the Asian Athletics Championships 2023, after Japan and the People’s Republic of China. Japan led the tally with a total of 37 medals, which included an impressive 16 golds. China, on the other hand, bagged a total of 22 medals, with eight of them being gold.
